Repetition- Trace of Meditation

The paint is pushed off from the canvas. As per the moves of forces, the fault of the paint is ex- posed, and its bottom is revealed. The overlapped paint through repeated actions fills the canvas, and along with its traces, waves rise. As you can guess from the title, the artist Yoo Ju-hee's 'Repetition – Trace of Meditation' maximizes the repetitive behavior in order to occupy the screen. Her work, expressed in solid color mainly using blue, adds depth to the limited canvas screen by using the materiality of paints. To make this, the artist chose Squeegee. For about 20 years from the early 2000s to the present, the artist having used squeegee as a brush rather than general painting tools reveals the bottom of the screen through repeated actions of pushing away paints. The surface of the canvas that was accidentally exposed was pushed away by a squeegee, stacked, contrasted with overlapping traces and created irregular patterns.
What is interesting in such patterns is that patterns generated by repetitive labor remind of the natural scenery of the surroundings. As if recording traces on the waves hitting and breaking or the snow heaped up, it reminds of the emotions that are similar to the traces of a moment. It re- minds of the sensibility of the author’s childhood spent in Hadong, Gyeongsangnam-do, and this is thought to have a connection to the fact that she scrutinized to the unique depth of colors free from shapes. In this exhibition, the latest work presented as a series of "Repetition – Trace of Meditation" shows an attempt to deviate from the overlapping pattern.
The screen that used to fluctuate by dramatic
overlapping is filled with static colors, and the trace of squeegee cutting the side reminds of the
shape of hieroglyphs in ancient murals. Especially, the large-scaled work installed in the center of
the exhibition hall acts as a frame to support one another among 4 pieces, forms a rectangular wall
and overwhelms the space.
Like the exhibition title that is identical to the artist’s series, this exhibition handles repeated traces
that she has scrutinized for a long period. The spaces divided in the side of one repeated color are
overlapped and repeated, and awaken the latent narrative beneath them. Through this expedition,
by taking the space in the artist’s work as a clue, it is expected to give an opportunity to remind a
certain moment in one’s personal memory.
